À l'intérieur de la Station spatiale internationale, chacun des six astronautes s'affaire à sa tâche, traversé par des interrogations existentielles. Certains s'inquiètent du sort de leur mariage, l'un rêve d'emmener sa fille dans l'espace tandis qu'une autre fait le deuil de sa mère. Si loin et si proches de la Terre, les astronautes n'ont jamais autant eu l'impression d'en faire partie, mais aussi d'en être les gardiens. Le temps s'écoule au rythme des orbites autour de la Terre, qui tient le rôle principal de ce roman contemplatif, mélancolique et à l'humour délicat. L'écriture suspendue de Samantha Harvey propose une conquête poétique de l'espace aux côtés de ces six personnages en quête de sens.

Jake, à l'approche de la soixantaine, apprend qu'il est atteint de la maladie d'Alzheimer. L'existence de cet homme apparaît dans toutes ses zones d'ombre (ses amours, son désir de paternité, le personnage imposant de sa mère), faisant apparaître certaines incohérences, certains mensonges, qui font s'interroger le lecteur sur la confiance qu'il peut accorder au récit de Jake.

Leonard Deppling revient à Londres après une année passée à s'occuper de son père mourant. Il demande refuge à son grand frère William qui reste une énigme aux yeux de tous, sa femme et ses enfants inclus. William est un ancien conférencier activiste qui pense que le bonheur et la liberté viennent de la connaissance de soi. Il passe ainsi sa vie à sonder l'étendue de sa soi-disant ignorance, et à donner des conférences libres sur les normes de la morale dans des jardins publics à d'anciens étudiants.
L'un de ses disciples est justement arrêté pour avoir suivi les préceptes de son mentor un peu trop littéralement. William est-il aussi responsable que les médias le laissent entendre ?
Enfermé dans ses croyances, il refuse de se défendre, plaçant sa quête de la vérité avant tout, avant son propre sort et le bonheur de sa famille. Mais qui est William ?
Samantha Harvey, dans une langue fluide et souple, nous invite à suivre le Socrate des temps odernes. Le chant le plus pur est un roman philosophique où l'auteur prend le temps de nous délivrer les observations des petits riens de la vie contemporaine, ceux qui veulent tout dire.
